Sawarabi in the manga
Sawarabi is a courtesan who initially follows Yukari’s lead. Her dependence on Yukari for customers helps explain why she joins the intimidation of Satoko.
She acts alongside Hatsune, first against Satoko and then against Yukari. Satoko persuades her to resist Yukari’s control, and she helps restrain Yukari. Her change of allegiance exposes how fragile the loyalty built on that dependence really is.
Obedience becomes negotiable when its cost is spoken aloud.
Sawarabi helps make Yukari’s threat possible. Her change of position reveals that the group’s apparent unity depends on pressure and advantage.
Chapter references identify the scenes behind each argument. “Our reading” is an interpretation, rather than a statement of the author’s confirmed intent.
An alliance can be interrupted
Chapter 13
Sawarabi joins the confrontation with Satoko. Yukari invokes the customers she provides. After Satoko challenges that dependence and asks for help, Sawarabi and Hatsune restrain Yukari.
The scene gives a subordinate person room to act, without pretending that her earlier participation was harmless. Satoko’s intervention makes another alignment possible. Economic dependence helps explain her hesitation; it need not define every later decision.
