Original observations from manga Chapters 1–4. Open only the questions you want to read.
The official profiles tell you who these people are. The opening chapters reveal how they respond when a promise, a family duty or a need for affection becomes a demand.
The answers below contain manga spoilers through Chapter 4. They stay closed until you choose to open them.
She is trying to stay alive. Shinpei has been assigned to kill her, so the marriage proposal gives him a reason to spare her. The scene establishes a bargain made under threat; it does not establish that the two already love each other.
Watch the gap between what each person hears. Satoko needs the promise to work long enough to escape. Shinpei treats it as an offer of lasting acceptance. Their different expectations are already pulling the story in two directions.
“Yandere” is a useful fan shorthand for the opening’s mixture of affection, possessiveness and danger. Shinpei seeks Satoko’s acceptance, reacts jealously and uses threats when he fears losing her. The term describes a fictional relationship pattern; it is not a medical diagnosis.
His protection does not remove the pressure he puts on her. A useful question while reading is whether Satoko can refuse him without risking her safety. The early chapters keep tenderness and control close together, which is part of the romance’s tension.
She makes the proposal, attempts to escape, and changes her approach when illness limits her options. In Chapter 3 she argues that protection should be mutual; in Chapter 4 she recognises and challenges Shinpei’s attempts to control her.
Those choices happen within severe constraints. She has limited physical strength and depends on a dangerous person for immediate survival. Her initiative and her lack of freedom can both be visible in the same scene. These opening observations do not settle her development across the complete series.
The manga’s Chapter 3 conversation gives Satoko’s age as 16 and says Shinpei is two years older, making him 18. This age comparison comes from the manga dialogue. The anime character page does not supply their ages.
Satoko’s birthday is January 23 in the official profile. Shinpei’s birthday is not listed there, so this guide leaves it unspecified.
It happens in Chapter 2. Satoko wipes blood from Shinpei’s mouth and kisses him as she tries to persuade him that she can accept him.
The gesture matters because the marriage bargain is still being tested. It gives Shinpei something he wants to believe, while Satoko is still searching for a way to survive. Describing it as a settled, mutual confession would skip that uncertainty.
