Kotaro Ogawa in the manga
Kotaro Ogawa is Satoko’s childhood friend and bodyguard. Loyal, protective and in love with her, he knows the sheltered life she hopes to leave behind.
He tries to rescue Satoko and initially sees Shinpei as a danger to her. Their rivalry gradually becomes cooperation, though he continues to challenge Shinpei’s violence. His care for Satoko eventually means supporting the partner she chooses rather than deciding for her. He also carries her letter to Shinpei much later in life.
His strongest act of loyalty is revising his own idea of her happiness.
Kotaro has history, duty and affection on his side. His difficult lesson is that knowing Satoko for years does not give him the final word on what she should want.
Chapter references identify the scenes behind each argument. “Our reading” is an interpretation, rather than a statement of the author’s confirmed intent.
A protector can mistake his wish for hers
Chapters 20–25, 30–34
Kotaro arrives with a family mission and his own hope of marrying Satoko. She does not accept his proposal. His attempt to take her away against her wishes leads to their fall and his broken leg. In Chapter 33, she insists that her family’s happiness and her own love can both be dreams worth pursuing. He then helps her and teaches Shinpei about caring for her.
His first answer offers a familiar order: return home, marry safely, let a trusted protector decide. Its attraction is understandable. The problem appears when her disagreement becomes an obstacle he tries to remove.
His later support costs him something he wanted. That makes the change persuasive. He can recognise danger in Shinpei without treating Satoko as incapable of choosing. Loyalty becomes the willingness to remain useful after losing authority over the outcome.
